TV On DVD: 'Burn Notice: Season Four'

6/16/2011 5:28pm EDT
Burn Notice
Last Tuesday saw Fox Home Entertainment drop Burn Notice: Season Four, a four-disc, eighteen-episode set just in time for the show's fifth season premiere next week (June 23). Here's my review.

The Show

Season four stands as my favorite year of Burn Notice to date. I say that while eating a certain amount of crow, as I was convinced that it had the potential to be the worst, but it ended up being a very pleasant surprise. I've already discussed at length how the series successfully upended its own formula, so I won't repeat myself too much here.

This season will always be special to...

My Favorite TV Police

The Chicago Code
There's no group of people that I love seeing on the small screen than the police. Having been there and done that, I have a certain affection for good portrayals of the men and women in law enforcement. Now that we've recently celebrated Police Week, here's my tribute to the TV cops (note: not federal agents or anything else - just cops!) who've left impressions on me over the years.

Sergeant Joe Friday (Jack Webb) and Detective Ben Gannon (Harry Morgan), NBC's Dragnet

My earliest memories of TV cops have to do with one of the most storied franchises in the genre. Thanks to Nick ...

Interview: Coby Bell Returns For More 'Burn Notice'

4/7/2011 3:00pm EDT
Burn Notice
Season five of Burn Notice is underway in Miami, and I'm certainly looking forward to it! Thankfully, I don't have to do any spy work to get the dish; I went straight to one of the experts - series star and January People Who Are Awesome honoree Coby Bell, who's ready for his second season as burned counterintelligence expert Jesse Porter. Coby and I sat down Wednesday to talk about what Burn Notice fans can expect when the show bows in the summer, as well as the recently-concluded fourth season of his other series, BET's The Game. Spoiler alert!

You've just started shooting season ...

'The Game' 4.12 'The Right To Choose' Recap and Review

3/30/2011 1:40am EDT
The Game
We've come to the end of the season that fans built: the season four finale of The Game. For a variety of reasons, I feel like the fans deserved better.

Let's get to the action:

Melanie & Derwin

If you missed last week's episode, Melanie really, really wants a baby. She's frustrated that she's not pregnant by now, which leads her to such interesting thoughts as wondering if the microwave irradiated her ovaries. (I can't answer that, but I can say that if you put Christmas lights in the microwave, fun things happen.) The two visit a doctor for help, and that's where we learn that Mel...

'The Game' 4.07 'You Say Goodbye, I Say Hello' Recap and Review

2/23/2011 1:46am EST
The Game
The Game set up plenty of intriguing storylines last week; it paid them off this week. In a season that's been mired in drama, there might not be laughs this week, but there is a pleasant reminder that these characters are still the people we fell in love with, beginning with...

Kelly & Jason

Kelly is venting into the camera about her marriage to Jason when the object of her irritation shows up, looking smart and with their smart-mouthed child in tow. Kelly may not be civil with her ex-husband, but she's all too happy to cash his check. Unfortunately for her, this time she's not g...

'The Game' 4.06 'Didn't You Know Who I Was?' Recap And Review

2/16/2011 1:41am EST
The Game
The drama hit an all-new high in last week's episode of The Game, so now what?

More drama, of course! Beginning with everyone's favorite spoiled star quarterback, who reveals...well, what I've been suspecting all along.

Malik, Derwin & Jason

Still in rehab, Malik is not enjoying group therapy (as if we expected he would?), while he continues to deny that he has any sort of problem whatsoever. "Were you a jackass before the drugs?" one of his fellow patients inquires, but he brushes it off. Later that night, he tries to hit on Jenna, a supermodel also in residence. He tells her, "I...

Top 10 Current TV Character Crushes

2/14/2011 12:30pm EST
Fairly Legal
It's Valentine's Day, and that means love is in the air (for some of us, anyway). It's also a perfect time to pay tribute to the fictional men who've made my heart melt this TV season, for one reason or another, or oftentimes several. These are ten guys who, if they were real, would have no problem getting my phone number.

Warning: there are spoilers for certain series. Each show is listed in each character's heading. If you're waiting for the DVD's, I'd advise skipping those particular sections.

Before I get too mushy, here's the criteria for making my list:

1) They had to be from...

'The Game' 2.04 'It Was All Good Just A Week Ago' Recap And Review

2/2/2011 1:38am EST
The Game BET
The title of this week's The Game is fitting: last week, everything was at least salvageable, until Malik had to go and get himself arrested. Apparently, he didn't pay attention to those anti-drunk driving PSA's. Or get the memo about not picking fights with cops. As a result, he got to go directly to jail. I've watched a lot of episodes of Jail, and that is not someplace I ever want to visit.

Tasha is quite unhappy that her son has been arrested. Derwin doesn't look too surprised. Even Jason knows this is a Big Deal, and walks out on his date (although he leaves her with the check...

People Who Are Awesome: Coby Bell

1/31/2011 10:09am EST
Burn Notice
Coby Bell tops my list of People Who Are Awesome because not only does he exemplify what this column is about, but he went from unknown to awesome in eight months.

There's so much attention given to those celebs who make headlines for all the wrong reasons, and not enough given to those who are honestly good people. I decided I wanted to devote some column space each month to recognizing those awesome individuals you might not know, and the moment I made that choice, I knew I had to start with Coby. It still blows my mind that eight months ago I had no idea who he was. In June of 2...

It's 'Game' Day As Show Makes Cable History

1/12/2011 5:31pm EST
Jet Magazine
I knew the numbers for the return of BET's The Game would be good. I did not anticipate that they would be making history.

The network has put out a press release telling us that the show's 7.7 million debut made it "the number one ad-supported sitcom telecast in cable TV history" and "number two telecast in BET history." Not only that, but the release says the hour outperformed all of the sitcom's earlier airings on both broadcast and cable - as if to say, "Take that, CW." Certainly that network is having second thoughts today about axing the series.

As if that wasn't enough, most ...

'The Game' Makes Triumphant Return

1/7/2011 2:46pm EST
The Game
It is my pleasure to report that The Game is back and it's as if the show never left.

There's a new look for the characters, and a little thing called a two-year time jump that we were told about in December, but excepting those two things, this is the show fans loved and fought for. I had a chance to take in the season four premiere (entitled "Parachutes...Beach Chairs") at a sneak preview screening in Los Angeles Thursday night, and I'll say that I cheered, I laughed and yes, I even got choked up a little.

Here's the dish: since it's been some time, there have been some pretty ser...

Interview: Coby Bell Dishes On 'Burn Notice' And 'The Game'

12/14/2010 10:40am EST
Burn Notice
I got an early Christmas present on Monday: the chance for a follow-up chat with one of my favorite actors, Burn Notice and The Game star Coby Bell. Picking up where our August conversation left off, Coby sat down with me to discuss that scene from Burn Notice, his second job on The Game, and a particular guest spot of his that you may have missed. Warning: this interview does contain some spoilers for both series.

You warned us in August that fans were going to be upset with Jesse - now we know why! What was your reaction when you realized Jesse was going to have to shoot Michael to sa...

'Burn Notice' 4.15 'Brotherly Love' Recap and Review

12/2/2010 11:06pm EST
Burn Notice 4.15
Last week, I wasn't too thrilled with the return of Natalie (Callie Thorne). This week, however, I am beside myself when it comes to Burn Notice, as it gives me the overdue return of Michael's ne'er do well brother Nate Westen (Seth Peterson).

Michael's bummed out, unhappy that Sam and Jesse are on their way to Santo Domingo to attend the auction of the list from Simon's Bible and he's not going with. Sam points out that his face wouldn't exactly be a welcome one in that company anyway, which gets Michael to relent. Leaving him behind, Jesse finally meets Justin Walsh (apologies as I ...
