'Supernatural' Season 9 Premiere Recap: Oh. My. Angel.

October 9th, 2013 10:30am EDT
Supernatural
"Supernatural's" season 8 finale left many angst-coated balls in the air: Castiel, having been tricked by Metatron, was rendered human; the angels were cast out of heaven; and Sam, choosing life, abandoned the trials only to very nearly perish anyway.  The season 9 premiere managed to keep all those balls compellingly in play while still ninja-kicking us in the heart.

Only a day has passed since what the media was calling the Global Meteor Shower had occurred.  No one is tweeting or Instagramming the celestial beings roaming the earth because most of them have found vessels.  In the hospit...

'Supernatural' Season 9: 5 Spoilers You Need To Know

October 7th, 2013 3:32pm EDT
Supernatural
“Supernatural,” The CW sci-fi drama about a pair of monster-hunting brothers, has spent its eight year run defying the odds.  It had several brushes with cancellation before nearly doubling its ratings in season 4.  The show also churned out some of its best episodes in its eighth season with an edge-of-your-seat finale that ended with all angels exiled from heaven and Sam collapsing from the trials.  The brothers Winchester return on Oct. 8, so here are five spoilers you need to know…

Welcome Back, Bobby.  This summer, Jim Beaver stunned fans announcing on Twitter that Bobby, Sam and De...

Jim Beaver Talks 'Justified,' Leaving 'Supernatural' And Whether He’ll Be Back On 'Breaking Bad'

Jim Beaver on 'Justified'
There’s not many offers to interview celebrities that come in my inbox that get me as excited as the one I received a few weeks ago. You might not even know his name, but odds are, you know some of his roles.

Jim Beaver is an actor I’ve followed for years, mostly because he’s had memorable roles in some of my favorite shows in the world ranging from Breaking Bad to Supernatural to Justified.

We covered all of his big roles in a recent interview. If you’re not caught up on all of those shows, you may want to steer clear of spoilers.

Jim, first, I have to say, as the huge TV watcher I am, ...

'Supernatural' Recap: The Road To Hell

April 4th, 2013 9:30am EDT
Supernatural
This season of "Supernatural" has been dubbed "Season Gr8" by fans, and it's not hard to figure out why.  The show rebounded from its rocky beginnings to truly live up to its moniker.  "Taxi Driver" is yet another example of this season’s ambitious strides in visual effects and sweeping, heartrending plots.

Grab your fourteen boxes of tissues, and let's dive in, shall we?

The old proverb "The road to hell is paved with good intentions" is the theme for Sam and Dean’s horrific lives.  And for poor Kevin Tran's (the increasingly impressive Osric Chau) world-saving intentions have set him ...

Things are definitely hitting the fan in this week's Justified. While the Marshals try to get Drew Thompson someplace safe - you have to love Art inquiring about a rocket launcher - Boyd is trying to appease an unhappy Nick Augustine (guest star Mike O'Malley; can you believe this is the guy who used to host Nickelodeon's GUTS?).

Holed up in his father's house, Raylan recounts history with Drew (guest star Jim Beaver), at least until Art comes in and gives him a status update. "Art, we gotta move, and we gotta move soon," Raylan insists. That's a good idea, because Boyd is telling Augustin...

'Supernatural' Season 7 Finale Recap: Winchesters, Interrupted

At its core, “Supernatural” is about two brothers, a badass car, and the crazy, colorful creatures they encounter and people they save on their road-tripping adventures. It simultaneously excels and breaks our hearts when anything threatens the delicate balance of off-the-wall humor, fraternal bonding and compelling action. The seventh season finale capped off a season of supreme highs and devilish lows by bidding farewell to a fan favorite, resurrecting another, and boldly going where no Winchester had gone before. Before I delve into commentary, I must rock out to “Carry On My Wayward ...

I’ve always admired the old adage, “Don’t work hard; work smart.” While I’m assuming the crew and cast toil their hot little asses off, the writers have always worked smart. This week’s installment of “Supernatural” is proof. as it brilliantly connects the bizarre dots scattered throughout the season and still manages to poke fun at both Americans who love mass-produced junk food and the heated political climate.

“There Will Be Blood” begins with a “Dateline”-esque segment about Dick Roman's purchase of Sucracorp, the largest manufacturer of high fructose corn syrup, aka the ingredien...

It’s better late than never. While most networks only have a handful shows with fates undetermined, the CW just made its first saves by officially renewing “The Vampire Diaries,” “90210” and “Supernatural” for the 2012-2013 television season.

“The Vampire Diaries” and "90210" will be entering their fourth season and fifth seasons, respectively. While “Supernatural,” starring Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, will be The CW’s longest-running scripted show when it kicks off its eighth season in the fall.

The paranormal drama will also have a new showrunner at the helm next season. Las...

“Supernatural” has always been admirably diverse, but around the fifth season, hunting became a good old boys club. Granted, those boys were equal parts pretty and goofy, but I was still perturbed by the severe lack of female hunters, angels and key players. So I wished, prayed and may have even written a few angry emails begging for a decent female character that wasn’t a damsel in need of rescue or charmed by Sam and Dean’s spectacular faces, had no problem fighting for the greater good and maybe had a few awesome one-liners. The answer to my prayers came in the form of Charlie Bradbur...

It’s probably inappropriate if I say I’d like to be a “fancy lady.” The moniker makes it seem alluring, like a woman who wears the finest dresses detailed with gold buttons and a bustle and rides side-saddle. It sounds like the heroine in Keira Knightley’s next movie. Only an old-timey ghost on “Supernatural” could make the world’s oldest profession sound romantic and cool.

“Of Grave Importance” is a decent installment that finally reunites Bobby’s ghost with the Sam and Dean.

The episode begins, not with the massacres of teenagers, but with Dean stress-eating on the hood of their l...

Leave it to “Supernatural” to wallop fans with Sam bravely facing his own demise only for poor dead Castiel to fly in for a last minute save and then to return with a lighthearted, filler episode that played as both a love letter to binge-drinking and a PSA for drinking and driving, and then stomp on our hearts with a one-two punch of--SPOILER ALERT-- Bobby Singer’s singers return. That’s enough to drive this liquor-averse blogger to drink in celebration and because of all the feelings. Where’s a raspberry mojito when you need one or 14? I love this show so much.

It’s been a big week for “Supernatural” fans. The little show that could won two People’s Choice Awards (Favorite Network Drama and Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy Show). Suck it, “Vampire Diaries!” TVLine.com also reported that—SPOILER ALERT— “Supernatural” staple Jim Beaver will eventually return, and my favorite guest star, Mark Pellegrino will be reprising his fabulously evil turn as Lucifer in the episode 15. So this week's episode felt like icing on a very awesome pop cult cake.

“Supernatural’s” winter hellatus (as the fans affectionately call it) gave me a lot of time to hypothesize where the show could go from the last moments of “Death’s Door,” where Bobby seemingly headed into the great beyond: Crowley could appear with the last-minute save like the badass King of Hell he is. Castiel could emerge from the waters of the lake, a fully redeemed angel of the Lord, and heal Bobby’s brain. He could've survived but suffered personality-altering brain damage and anemsia. Sam and Dean could have hunter’s funeral, a body burning on the pyre. It's “Supernatural” afte...

As a fan of “Supernatural,” there are certain things I expect each week: crass, dark humor, violent deaths, epic monsters, and of course, a hearty helping of brotherly, visceral angst. After 135 episodes, I thought the show was done taking my breath away. And then I curled up on the couch to watch “Supernatural’s” winter finale, “Death’s Door,” and realized that executive producer Sera Gamble and company had found completely new and twisted ways to destroy me. And I love them for it. “Death’s Door” was a wistful, beautifully written and acted exploration of the human spirit, the traged...

Ever since The CW released the description for this week’s episode, I’ve been drooling, more than Dean Winchester approaching the Biggerson’s pie buffet, at the notion of a gore-filled hour of my favorite demon hunters becoming the hunted by a flesh-eating predator that looked like a zombie from “The Walking Dead.” Instead, I had to watch an exposition-heavy episode where one of the best hunters in the world was taken down by a friggin’ sandwich. With Thanksgiving around the corner, I’m quite grateful that Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) are so incredibly easy on the eyes, ...

As an invested fan, I want to experience the adventure with the characters and be as shocked and awed as the next unspoiled viewer. It’s a pop culture quagmire. I heard about “Slash Fiction’s” awesome premise weeks ago. The episode had a fabulous potential for badassery, gore and the patented fraternal angst that keeps the fangirls swooning after more than 130 episodes. Sadly, “Slash Fiction”—while ent...

Last week’s episode of “Supernatural” ended with the season’s biggest shocker so far when Dean killed Sam’s first crush—a brain-eating demon with a morals—after his little brother had all but begged him to trust in his judgment that she wouldn’t kill again and let her go.

It was an ugly moment for the often self-destructive Dean Winchester, and it spoke to his frayed mental state. His guilt carried over to this week’s episode that felt like classic “Supernatural” and a love letter to the fans who’ve stuck around for seven crazy seasons. “Defending Your Life” had loads of gore, the Winch...

When we last left the “Supernatural” universe, Sam and Dean were careening towards the Leviathan-infested hospital via ambulance—Sam was seizing with a head injury, Dean with bloodily broken leg, and Bobby presumed dead.

Slickly directed by series’ star Jensen Ackles, “The Girl Next Door” was thankfully easier on my fangirl heart. It began mere minutes after last week’s cliffhanger with the brothers arriving at Sioux Falls General. Dean, a fighter to the end, tried to climb off the gurney and find his brother. When “Supernatural” first started seven years ago, it was just a show about two brothers with a cool car, saving people and hunting things while they searched for their father. I had no idea that it would nearly double its ratings in the fourth season—thanks to passionate fans and the internet—or that it would snarkily and bravely tackle such enormous themes as religion, God and the true meaning of faith. But season six ended with everyone's favorite angel, Castiel, declaring himself the new God after bingeing on Purgatory’s doomed souls with as much gusto as Dean (Jensen Ackles) attacks ...

To say that I am a fan of “Supernatural”—The CW thriller with a rabid cult following—would be like saying that the Oprah Winfrey has a little bit of money in the bank. I have ravenously watched it, trolled the internet for spoilers and leaked script pages, and giddily listened to interviews from the writers, producers and actors who speak at conventions like Comic-Con.

Dean wakes up in the 'Now', in bed next to Lisa. Once again, the music for this show is perfection, Bob Seger's 'Beautiful Loser' playing in the background. In tonight's "very special episode" of Supernatural, "The Curious Case of Dean Winchester," fan favorite Bobby Singer makes a bet with a demon in order to regain some of his youth and health back.
