Review: Entertaining Heist Flick 'The Art Of The Steal' A Good Time At The Movies

Review: Entertaining Heist Flick 'The Art Of The Steal' A Good T
Some movies exist solely to entertain. Meaning there are films that strive to be original, groundbreaking and go beyond the norm and then there are those that simply want to satisfy with story and style. The new heist picture that’s a cross between "Ocean’s Eleven" and "The Thomas Crown Affair" entitled "The Art Of The Steal" is one such well meaning flick – a clever yet accessibly good time at the movies.

Crunch Calhoun used to be a skilled wheelman in a very successful gang of art thieves. That is until his brother Nicky got caught, gave him up and he then found himself spending some ...

Alison Pill: 'Topless tweet haunted me for months'

September 5th, 2013 3:01am EDT
Alison Pill
Actress Alison Pill is still cringing about her accidental topless tweet and she's convinced everyone she meets has seen the photo of her boobs.

The Newsroom star stunned her thousands of followers last September (12) when she uploaded a candid snap meant for her then-fiance Jay Baruchel to her page on the social networking site.

Pill, who is no longer engaged to funnyman Baruchel, has now opened up about her naked photo shame.

She tells U.S. talk show host Conan O'Brien, "I had one of these pictures on my phone because I had been away from my, at the time, fiance... I'm still trying to ...

Funnymen begged Seth Rogen to tone down personal beefs in new comedy

June 3rd, 2013 8:41pm EDT
Seth Rogen
Actor/director Seth Rogen has revealed his comedy pals in new movie This Is The End asked him to tone down jokes he made at their expense in the film.

Jonah Hill, Jay Baruchel, Craig Robinson, Danny McBride and James Franco were among the stars who played themselves in the hilarious apocalypse movie and screenwriters Rogen and Evan Goldberg wanted the castmates to play extensions of themselves.

This gave the writer/directors the chance to poke fun at their friends' insecurities and personal issues, which led to some tensions on set.

Rogen tells Complex magazine, "I think everyone had the...

Tropic Thunder star Jay Baruchel and his actress fiancée Alison Pill have called off their engagement.

The Canadian couple was planning to wed last year, but Baruchel recently alerted fans to the fact that not only had the nuptials not taken place but he had been ditched.

In a now-deleted tweet, he wrote, "Alone again, naturally. Heartbroken," adding, "I won't be on twitter for awhile gang. Getting dumped rules."

In a recent interview with the Times Colonist, Baruchel explained why the wedding never happened: "Unfortunately, we're two busy people who are intrinsically lazy, so in our...

Emma Watson Will Witness 'The End of the World'

Emma Watson
Emma Watson survived the wrath of Voldemort. But will she survive the end of days?

The Hogwarts graduate will work her formidable magic as the latest guest of Seth Rogen's all-star apocalypse party, "The End of the World," according to Heat Vision.

Watson has joined the increasingly impressive ensemble cast of the dark comedy, which also just recruited Jason Segel and David Krumholtz for the tale of, well, the end of the world, as seen through the eyes of several young actor-types playing meta-versions of themselves.

Emma Watson will be playing "Emma Watson" in the film, which also featu...

Last week I was lucky enough to see an advanced screening of the Drew Goddard/Joss Whedon horror flick “The Cabin in the Woods,” which took SXSW by storm. I won’t comment on it just yet, but I will say that I’m excited to be interviewing two of its stars, Kristen Connolly and Fran Kranz, in the coming days. Keep your eyes peeled for my write up.

Big budget franchise season arrived last week with the premiere of “The Hunger Games,” and continues this week with the release of the Greek action sequel “Wrath of the Titans.” Also coming out this week are the light-hearted Snow White picture...

Celebrities That Turn 30 in 2012
It's hard to believe for many of us the 1982 was 30 years ago. In that year, Ronald Reagan was President, Joe Montana was the Superbowl XVI MVP and the space shuttle Columbia made its first mission.

In movies, E.T., Tootsie and Gandhi ruled the box office while Chariots of Fire took best picture at the Academy Awards that year. Also taking home Oscar gold for best actor and actress in 1982 respectively were Katharine Hepburn and Henry Fonda for On Golden Pond. In music Michael Jackson released Thriller which sold more than 25 million copies, becoming the biggest selling album in history.

Seth Rogen Prepares For 'The Apocalypse'

Everybody has an escape plan for the apocalypse. You know, zombies, aliens, nuclear winter -- whatever form the coming apocalypse is going to take, chances are that, however unlikely it may seem, you believe you're going to be one of the tiny number of people who actually survive. But as horrible as the specter of apocalyptic destruction is, now there's an even more terrifying thought to consider: What if you're right?

That's the premise behind Seth Rogen's latest project, "The Apocalypse." Because being eaten by zombies may be bad, but getting stuck in a bomb shelter filled with a bunch o...

'The Sorcerer’s Apprentice' Intertwines Science And Magic

July 16th, 2010 10:27am EDT
Sorcerer
Customarily science and magic are in direct opposition to each other. Science seeks logical answers to questions through proven experimentation, whereas magic relies on faith to turn impossible feats into possible ones.

What makes “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” fascinating is that it rejects convention, intertwining the concepts of science and magic. This film implies that great scientific knowledge leads to refined skills as a conjurer, which really makes you wonder, if Einstein was a sorcerer would his grasp of physics make him powerful?

As the lore states in “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,...

In an earlier episode, I mentioned Dog Pound, a film about juvenile delinquents trying to survive in a youth detention facility. Since then the young heroes I’ve encountered have been much better (if not always positive) role models.

The Trotsky is a film that you can still find on demand, and a film that recommend to anyone who’s a fan of the 80’s Brat Pack era. It’s the ...

On Thursday night I finally went to see “Crazy Heart” since it was still playing at one of my local theaters. While it’s not always the happiest film, it is grounded and real, like you’re actually following the life of a country musician addicted to the rock star lifestyle, despite being past his prime.

Jeff Bridges gives a deep and nuanced performance as the lead character Bad Blake, convincingly portrays a washed up country singer riding on fumes. Blake’s selfish behavior and penchant for the bottle alienate him from other characters in the film, but Bridges’ kind face and sense of hum...

As I sit here preparing this column, the Oscars have not aired yet, but I must admit there’s not a high likelihood that I will be watching them when they come on. Most years I’ll watch a few minutes here or there, if I’m interested to see who wins an award in real time.

The ceremony is drawn out and boring in my opinion, and requires sitting through too many commercials to warrant watching from start to finish. I care about the winners of various awards, just not enough to suffer through the tedium. I’m sure I’ll have some feedback for next week’s column though on the winners and loser...
