Review: Entertaining Heist Flick 'The Art Of The Steal' A Good Time At The Movies

Review: Entertaining Heist Flick 'The Art Of The Steal' A Good T
Some movies exist solely to entertain. Meaning there are films that strive to be original, groundbreaking and go beyond the norm and then there are those that simply want to satisfy with story and style. The new heist picture that’s a cross between "Ocean’s Eleven" and "The Thomas Crown Affair" entitled "The Art Of The Steal" is one such well meaning flick – a clever yet accessibly good time at the movies.

Crunch Calhoun used to be a skilled wheelman in a very successful gang of art thieves. That is until his brother Nicky got caught, gave him up and he then found himself spending some ...

Alison Pill And Jay Baruchel Call Off Engagement

Alison Pill Jay Baruchel
Tropic Thunder star Jay Baruchel and his actress fiancée Alison Pill have called off their engagement.
The Canadian couple was planning to wed last year, but Baruchel recently alerted fans to the fact that not only had the nuptials not taken place but he had been ditched.

In a now-deleted tweet, he wrote, "Alone again, naturally. Heartbroken," adding, "I won't be on twitter for awhile gang. Getting dumped rules."

In a recent interview with the Times Colonist, Baruchel explained why the wedding never happened: "Unfortunately, we're two busy people who are intrinsically lazy, so in our...

'This Is The End' Reveals Hilarious Red Band Trailer

12/21/2012 12:07pm EST
This is the End
Consider us excited for This is the End after watching this hilarious red band trailer.

In the uncut look at the film, Seth Rogen, James Franco, Craig Robinson, Jay Baruchel, Jonah Hill and Danny McBride must survive the end of the world (great timing on the trailer release). The best part, perhaps, is that they are playing themselves.

Holed up in Franco's home in California, the actors need to survive the apocalypse and each other. The trailer is full of nasty jokes and over-the-top gore. Check it out!

This Red Band trailer is recommended for viewers over the age of 17

Trailer Talk: This Week in Movies
Last week I was lucky enough to see an advanced screening of the Drew Goddard/Joss Whedon horror flick “The Cabin in the Woods,” which took SXSW by storm. I won’t comment on it just yet, but I will say that I’m excited to be interviewing two of its stars, Kristen Connolly and Fran Kranz, in the coming days. Keep your eyes peeled for my write up.

Big budget franchise season arrived last week with the premiere of “The Hunger Games,” and continues this week with the release of the Greek action sequel “Wrath of the Titans.” Also coming out this week are the light-hearted Snow White picture...

Celebrities That Turn 30 in 2012
It's hard to believe for many of us the 1982 was 30 years ago. In that year, Ronald Reagan was President, Joe Montana was the Superbowl XVI MVP and the space shuttle Columbia made its first mission.

In movies, E.T., Tootsie and Gandhi ruled the box office while Chariots of Fire took best picture at the Academy Awards that year. Also taking home Oscar gold for best actor and actress in 1982 respectively were Katharine Hepburn and Henry Fonda for On Golden Pond. In music Michael Jackson released Thriller which sold more than 25 million copies, becoming the biggest selling album in history.

Good Neighbors photo
How well do you know your neighbors? What secrets lie behind the doors of those who live in close vicinity? And does being familiar with those around you truly make you safe? So goes the Hitchcock style premise of the new thriller "Good Neighbors," opening July 29 from Magnolia Pictures Releasing that stars Scott Speedman ("Underworld," "The Strangers"), Emily Hampshire (of the upcoming David Cronenberg film "Cosmopolis"), Jay Baruchel ("She’s Out of My League," "The Sorcerer’s Apprentice") and is directed by Canadian filmmaker Jacob Tierney ("The Trotsky"). The film is based on the Chr...

Canadian actor Jay Baruchel is engaged to wed his girlfriend Alison Pill.

The Tropic Thunder star proposed to Pill over the Christmas holidays, but admits he was wracked with nerves when he presented the actress with a 180-year-old Victorian ring.

He tells ET Canada, "When I gave it to her, I just said, basically, 'S**t or get off the pot.' I said, 'F**k it, will you marry me?'"

Baruchel met Pill, who's starred in Milk and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, while filming upcoming hockey film Goon.

The couple plan to tie the knot in September 2012.

How to Train Your Dragon
Hit animated children's film "How to Train Your Dragon" is roaring back to the big screen - movie executives are planning a 3-D sequel for 2013.

The DreamWorks picture, which featured characters voiced by Gerard Butler, Jay Baruchel and America Ferrera, fired up the worldwide box office when it was released earlier this year, banking almost $500 million globally.

And studio bosses are hoping to take another swing at the box office takings when the second installment of the Viking tale hits cinemas in three years' time.

'The Sorcerer’s Apprentice' Intertwines Science And Magic

7/16/2010 10:27am EDT
Customarily science and magic are in direct opposition to each other. Science seeks logical answers to questions through proven experimentation, whereas magic relies on faith to turn impossible feats into possible ones.

What makes “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” fascinating is that it rejects convention, intertwining the concepts of science and magic. This film implies that great scientific knowledge leads to refined skills as a conjurer, which really makes you wonder, if Einstein was a sorcerer would his grasp of physics make him powerful?

As the lore states in “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,...

Sophie Monk At 'The Sorcerer's Apprentice' Premiere - Hot Or Not?

7/13/2010 2:25pm EDT
Sophie Monk
Sophie Monk looked simple and sexy at "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" special Los Angeles premiere benefiting the Creative Visions Foundation.

The Australian actress stunned radio listeners in her native country after outing an ex-boyfriend as cheater.

She said she had caught her ex-boyfriend, plastic surgeon John Diaz, in bed with another woman earlier this year. We're not trying to objectify women here at Starpulse, but seriously dude? You found it necessary to cheat on that?

Fun facts about Sophie:
-She started her entertainment career as a member of a girl band.
-She was engaged to Good ...

Trailer Talk: This Week In Movies - 'The Sorcerer's Apprentice,' 'Inception,' & More

7/12/2010 9:42am EDT
I saw one of this week’s films “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” last Thursday; however as part of my agreement in seeing the advanced screening, I am not allowed to share my opinion on the film until its release on Wednesday. Keep your eyes peeled for a review later this week though.

There are only three films opening during the current week: “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” “Inception,” and “The Concert.” Personally I’m incredibly excited about seeing “Inception” because I’m a huge fan of both Leonardo DiCaprio and director Christopher Nolan.

Nicolas Cage Won't Eat Pork Because Pigs Don't Have 'Dignified' Sex

5/19/2010 9:03am EDT
Nicolas Cage
Nicolas Cage is a fussy eater.

He explains, "I actually choose the way I eat according to the way animals have sex. I think fish are very dignified with sex. So are birds. But pigs, not so much. So I don't eat pig meat or things like that. I eat fish and fowl."

His new film, "The Sorceror's Apprentice," is inspired by Disney favorite "Fantasia." In modern-day Manhattan, average teen Dave Stutler (Jay Baruchel) hones his magical powers under the tutelage of master sorcerer Balthazar Blake (Cage).

Cage stars in the upcoming film "Hungry Rabbit Jumps" about a high school teacher who bands ...

Tribeca: 'The Trotsky' & 'Beware The Gonzo' – A Tale of Two Heroes

5/3/2010 1:13pm EDT
The Trotsky
As the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival draws to a close, I’m inclined to believe that this year saw an influx of young protagonists gracing the big screens across New York, delighting and riveting audiences alike of all ages. In an earlier episode, I mentioned Dog Pound, a film about juvenile delinquents trying to survive in a youth detention facility. Since then the young heroes I’ve encountered have been much better (if not always positive) role models.

The Trotsky is a film that you can still find on demand, and a film that recommend to anyone who’s a fan of the 80’s Brat Pack era. It’s the ...

Nicolas Cage Always Wanted To Make Family Movies

4/7/2010 11:33am EDT
Nicolas Cage came to the comic book convention WonderCon in San Francisco to show families a preview of his upcoming film The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. Cage stars along with young actors Jay Baruchel and Teresa Palmer, who recalled sneaking into Cage’s R-rated movies when they were younger. That struck a chord with Cage.

“I love that story because my wife snuck into Face/Off,” Cage said of Baruchel’s antics.

Cage may have become more of a family man, but he says he always wanted to make family movies. “I want to do these movies anyway,” Cage said. “I want to reiterate that this movie will e...

The DreamWorks movie, which also features the voices of Jay Baruchel and America Ferrera, tells the tale of a Viking boy who tames a fire-breathing dragon.

The 3-D film ended "Alice in Wonderland's" three-week run at number one; Tim Burton's Disney fantasy slips to second place with $17.3 million, taking its total gross in the U.S. to $293.1 million.

John Cusack's 1980s comedy "Hot Tub Time Machine" enters the chart at three af...

Gerard Butler, America Ferrera, And Jay Baruchel Premiere 'How To Train Your Dragon' (Video)

3/22/2010 10:51am EDT
Gerard Butler shifted from "Bounty Hunter" to "How to Train Your Dragon" in a handful of days, continuing his breakneck pace of filmmaking that has rarely paused since "300."

Butler says the new animated film teaches a valuable lesson of patience and tolerance. He voices the father to the main character, who is played by Jay Baruchel.

Jays is excited to be in a children's film, recalling the ones he saw as a child still stick with him to this day - and the chance to star in a feature that could resonate with today's children was one of the reasons he became an actor.

America Ferrera voic...

Trailer Talk: This Week In Movies-'How To Train Your Dragon,' 'Greenberg,' & More

3/22/2010 9:09am EDT
The hot tub machine
On Thursday night I finally went to see “Crazy Heart” since it was still playing at one of my local theaters. While it’s not always the happiest film, it is grounded and real, like you’re actually following the life of a country musician addicted to the rock star lifestyle, despite being past his prime.

Jeff Bridges gives a deep and nuanced performance as the lead character Bad Blake, convincingly portrays a washed up country singer riding on fumes. Blake’s selfish behavior and penchant for the bottle alienate him from other characters in the film, but Bridges’ kind face and sense of hum...

'She's Out Of My League's' Alice Eve Proves That Girls With Two First Names Are Hotter

3/12/2010 5:49pm EST
Alice Eve
Alice Eve showed up to the "She's Out of My League" Las Vegas premiere at Planet Hollywood Hotel and Casino on Wednesday looking pretty in pink. She somehow manages to look both demure and sexy - a tough feat to pull off!

In the film an airport security guard named Kirk (Jay Baruchel), gets involved with a girl (Alice Eve) who's very obviously of a higher caliber than himself, and he schemes to make the relationship last as his friends and family watch along in disbelief. Even Kirk isn't exactly sure what Molly sees in him, though he's willing to do whatever it takes to make the relationsh...

Celebrities Who Date & Marry 'Average Joes'

Woody Harrelson
This Friday, the romantic comedy "She's Out of My League" hits theaters. In the film, a sexy event planner, Molly (Alice Eve), crosses paths with and begins dating Kirk (Jay Baruchel), a goofy and gawky airport employee. The couple has to face the doubts and criticism of friends and family. As the promotional posters read, "How can a 10 go for a 5?"

In Hollywood, couples usually date inside the industry. But check out six couples where someone snatched a star out of their league:

Perhaps the most recent of the bunch, Kevin Jonas and Danielle Deleasa tied the knot last December. The elde...

Remember Me - Robert Pattinson
As I sit here preparing this column, the Oscars have not aired yet, but I must admit there’s not a high likelihood that I will be watching them when they come on. Most years I’ll watch a few minutes here or there, if I’m interested to see who wins an award in real time.

The ceremony is drawn out and boring in my opinion, and requires sitting through too many commercials to warrant watching from start to finish. I care about the winners of various awards, just not enough to suffer through the tedium. I’m sure I’ll have some feedback for next week’s column though on the winners and loser...

'She's Out Of My League' Is Funnier Than You Would Expect

2/27/2010 8:43am EST
The stars of "She's Out of My League," Alice Eve and Krysten Ritter, attended a screening of their new movie in Boston Thursday night. The "American Pie"-esque romantic comedy actually surprised the audience with way more laughs than expected and overall left the crowd pleased. It's a perfect date movie - just make sure to leave your parents at home.

Alice Eve plays Molly, a hot event planner dubbed as a "perfect 10." She is on her way to New York when she leaves her cell phone in security at the Pittsburgh airport. As fate has it, it finds its way into the hands of TSA worker, Kirk (play...

Judd Apatow: His Career And Latest 'Funny People'

7/30/2009 10:38am EDT
Judd Apatow
This Friday marks the theatrical release of "Funny People," the Judd Apatow dramedy starring Adam Sandler as a terminally ill stand-up comedian. As the buzz around this film has grown, fans and critics alike have wondered if Apatow, who never met a penis joke he didn't like, was making a huge mistake by veering into "serious" territory. Pretty odd, considering that one of Apatow's most loved and respected works was the TV series, "Freaks and Geeks," a show that beautifully walked the line between hilarity and heartbreaking realism.

Although it may seem like he came from out of nowhere to...

TV Year In Review: The Best, The Worst & The In Between

12/26/2008 7:31am EST
Breaking Bad
In a year that saw the writers strike bring forth more reality TV than we ever thought possible and reduce quality drama to a war of attrition, the boob tube still managed to deliver quality drama series at an impressive clip.

5. "BREAKING BAD" (AMC) - The aforementioned strike meant we only got seven episodes of former "X-Files" writer Vince Gilligan's masterful meth-strewn series, but after enduring its visceral fury, could we have really taken anymore?

Unlike another suburban drug dealing series, the torpid "Weeds", "Breaking Bad" offers a modern-d...

Interview: Brandon T. Jackson of 'Tropic Thunder'

8/13/2008 9:57am EDT
Tropic Thunder
(Hollywoodchicago) – For “Tropic Thunder” star and Chris Tucker protégé Brandon T. Jackson, the fictional Booty Sweat literally is his Hollywood calling card.

The Red Bull-like energy drink is a scripted creation of writer, director, producer and star actor Ben Stiller in the new comedy. The film’s talent list, which includes both “A”-list actors and up-and-coming actors, is longer than two or three typical films today combined.

Tugg Speedman (Ben Stiller, left) and Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr., right) are shooting an epic war movie and wind up in a real battle in the action...
