'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit' Review: 'Lost Reputation/Above Suspicion' (14.01/14.02)

September 27th, 2012 9:00am EDT
Law & Order: SVU
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit got a shot in the arm last season with its major cast turnover, finishing one chapter and starting a new one. How does the show keep its momentum? By bringing in a pair of top-tier guest stars in Adam Baldwin and Paget Brewster, keeping Dean Winters around, and giving more attention to Dann Florek. It all adds up to the start of an intriguing season for SVU.

Picking up where the thirteenth-season finale left off, Special Victims Unit boss Captain Cragen (Florek) has woken up with a dead woman in his bed - the witness who previously approached Dete...

'Firefly' Cast To Reunite At Comic-Con For 10th Anniversary

June 28th, 2012 10:21am EDT
Firefly
Joss Whedon and several cast members from his sci-fi drama "Firefly" will reunite for a panel discussion at Comic-Con in San Diego, Calif., in July.

The get together on July 13 will mark the show's 10th anniversary. The series was an "outer-space Western" set several centuries in the future. Nathan Fillion starred as Captain Mal Reynolds, a disillusioned interplanetary-war veteran and outlaw of the Alliance, the current ruling government. The series was canceled after just 14 episodes.

The Comic-Con panel will include stars Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Adam Baldwin, Sean Maher and Michael Fairma...

'Chuck' Recap: 'Chuck Versus Sarah'/'Chuck Versus The Goodbye' (Series Finale)

January 28th, 2012 1:04am EST
Chuck
It's the end of the road for Chuck. And there's a lot at the end of that road: laughter, tears, and romance, even if it's not in the way you might want.

Sarah, still believing the villainous Quinn (Angus MacFadyen) is her handler, is making Chuck more than a little confused. Faced with the idea that he almost lost her and Morgan because of the Intersect, he launches a mission to destroythe thing that changed his entire life. He's shocked when Sarah uploads the Intersect instead and leaves the whole team trapped in the lab. Even she is surprised when Quinn activates the explosive h...

Q&A: 'Chuck' Star Adam Baldwin & Co-Creator Chris Fedak Say Finale Is 'Epic And Special'

January 27th, 2012 11:00am EST
Chuck
Tonight, NBC's Chuck signs off after five seasons - but not before I got some parting words from star Adam Baldwin and co-creator Chris Fedak.

Chris, what can we expect from tonight's finale?

Chris Fedak: We have essentially an epic finale for you guys. It’s going to be different than anything we’ve ever done before on Chuck. We knew that we were building toward our final episode, and we really wanted to put together something special.

It’s going to be a two-hour finale. The first part of it is called "Chuck Versus Sarah" and the second part’s called "Chuck Versus the Goodbye." Everyth...

Celebrities That Turn 50 In 2012
The year was 1962, John F. Kennedy was President of the United States and the cold war with Russia was in full swing as the world witnessed the Cuban Missile Crisis. Also in 1962, Marilyn Monroe died of a drug overdose at the age of 36 and Johnny Carson took over the duties of "The Tonight Show." Landmark movies that hit the big screen in '62 included "Lawrence of Arabia" and "To Kill a Mockingbird." The Academy Award winner for best picture that year was none other than "West Side Story."

We think you'll be surprised at how young many of today's popular celebrities look who were born in ...

'Chuck' 5.08 'Chuck Versus The Baby' Review

December 31st, 2011 12:07am EST
Chuck
This week's Chuck boasts some very familiar special guests - and a baby. It's unashamedly sentimental, but that's just fine for a fun adventure as we near the end of the series.

Five years ago, in Budapest, Sarah was hanging out with Peter Burke...wait, wrong show, but that is Tim DeKay of White Collar as Sarah's handler Kieran Ryker. He orders her to take out a dining room full of thugs and rescue a baby. Now Ryker's defected, and that cute little baby is coming back to haunt Sarah.

Seems the tot was in line for a huge fortune, and rather than turn him over to Ryker so that he coul...

'Chuck' Recap: 'Chuck Versus The Curse' (5.06)

December 17th, 2011 12:14am EST
Chuck
On this week's Chuck, the CIA is ticked, Morgan thinks he's a ninja, and Rebecca Romijn ruins date night for Ellie and Awesome. "Chuck Versus The Curse" is a typical Chuck episode. It could also have been a lot more.

Devon and Ellie pick an unfortunate time to play spies, as the CIA confuses them with Chuck and Sarah (via Chuck's OpenTable account of all things?). Although this is eventually clarified, they believe Robyn Cunnings (Romijn) when she says that she works with Chuck, and get themselves abducted. Robyn wants The Omen (not the movie, the virus from "Chuck Versus The Hack O...

'Chuck' Recap: 'Chuck Versus The Business Trip' (5.04)

Chuck
I don't know about you, Chuck fans, but to me a Buy More convention sounds like fun. There's one in Riverside this week, and it's the start of more fun, action-packed shenanigans that resurrect just what makes Chuck tick.

Team Bartowski is determined to get the Intersect out of Morgan's head in order to stop the CIA from having him killed. This briefly reunites them with General Beckman (Bonita Friederecy), but also brings Decker (Richard Burgi, who seems to have found a second wind in his career playing jerks) back to say that a top-flight assassin named "The Viper" is going to c...

'Chuck' Recap: 'Chuck Versus The Bearded Bandit' (5.02)

November 5th, 2011 12:04am EDT
Chuck
Season five of Chuck got off to a good start with last week's season premiere. It keeps rolling this week, with a second episode that starts to lay out where the final year is headed.

This week, we meet the competition: Verbanski Corp, led by Gertrude Verbanski (that's The Matrix star Carrie-Anne Moss, sounding like she's narrating a Cyberdyne advert). She used to work for the KGB, and Casey really doesn't like her, having had a nasty run-in (and subsequent fling) with her in 1995. Since then, she's put together a whole compound of minions, and is out to recruit a few more from Tea...

Q&A: 'InSight' Director Richard Gabai

October 15th, 2011 11:00am EDT
InSight
For every movie that you hear about, there's probably at least a dozen that you don't. It shouldn't surprise you that some of those flicks that don't get a big release or promo push are really, really good. Maybe even better than those big blockbusters that do get all the attention.

I recently spoke with Richard Gabai, director of InSight. The flick stars Natalie Zea (of Justified fame) as an ER nurse who begins experiencing the memories of a young stabbing victim whose life she tries to save. She partners with the detective working the case (Sean Patrick Flanery of Boondock Saints) t...

TV on DVD: 'Chuck: The Complete Fourth Season' [Blu-Ray]

Chuck
In case you missed it, NBC's Chuck is moving to Fridays for its final season beginning October 28. To prepare you for the end of one of TV's cult hits, Warner Home Video recently released the complete fourth season on Blu-Ray and DVD. Here's an evaluation of the Blu-Ray edition.

The Show

I reviewed Chuck throughout the fourth season, and on second glance, my opinions haven't changed all that much. There are a lot of things that work, and some that just don't - which makes it pretty much like every other TV series out there. I have yet to see any show have a perfect season. What ...

'Chuck' 4.22 'Chuck Versus The Cliffhanger' Review

May 17th, 2011 12:04am EDT
Chuck
Chuck played by the numbers: it set up a big event (Chuck and Sarah's wedding) for its big finale, an episode which you can consider even bigger as we now know it also sets the table for the show's fifth and final season. It wasn't the whiz-bang finale I was expecting after all the hype, but it was one that was true to what the show stands for, and that's good enough for me.

To save Sarah, Team Bartowski must get the antidote she needs from Alexei Volkoff, which pits them against hardened CIA operative Clyde Decker (Richard Burgi of Desperate Housewives and The Sentinel). True to...

'Chuck' 4.23 'Chuck Versus The Last Details' Review

May 9th, 2011 11:54pm EDT
Chuck
Like our title character, Chuck fans know that when you say everything is perfect and nothing can go wrong, something - a lot of somethings, actually - will go wrong. In this case, 'wrong' sees Ellie turn into the wedding planner equivalent of a Bridezilla and Chuck's mom get kidnapped by Vivian Volkoff. No big deal, right? (Obvious sarcasm is obvious.)

"Chuck Versus The Last Details" feels like a typical Chuck episode, in that it derives much of its humor from our heroes' errors, quirks and mishaps, like Jeff and Lester having hours of footage of Sarah from the Buy More, or Chuck a...

'Chuck' 4.21 'Chuck Versus The Wedding Planner' Review

April 18th, 2011 11:57pm EDT
Chuck
I've got two words that come to mind with this week's Chuck: Gary Cole.

While he's a fine dramatic actor (I still miss Wanted and to a lesser extent, Crusade), Gary Cole is always going to be Bill Lumbergh from Office Space to me. He's got great comedic ability that makes everyone around him funnier, and his work as Sarah's con-artist father Jack Burton is no exception. I know much has been made of Linda Hamilton's casting as Chuck's mom this season, but I'd say Cole is just as good as Sarah's father. It was immensely fun to see Jack actually somewhat in charge of Team Bartowski thi...

'Chuck' 4.20 'Chuck Versus The Family Volkoff' Review

April 12th, 2011 12:00am EDT
Chuck
I wouldn't want to be Vivian Volkoff. Especially not since she's evil these days.

The CIA has fingered her as personally responsible for the bombs planted in Castle last time out, and tagged her for assassination. Vivian pleads innocence, and Chuck is forced to turn to her father, Alexei (Timothy Dalton, still in fine form) to help prove it, starting with finding all the components of a weapon she unearthed in his arsenal. This takes them to Somalia (hello, blatant Windows Live product placement!), where one piece is in the hands of a gambling-addicted pirate. It's pretty funny to se...

'Chuck' 4.19 'Chuck Versus The Muuurder' Review

Chuck
After the royal screwing up of the Gretas last week, this week's Chuck is like Clue, only with extra dead bodies. It sees our hero with Bentley's job of finding more Intersect candidates, and to no one's surprise, they're a weird bunch. There's an obligatory training montage, but just as Chuck is about to pick the winner, one of them is murdered. And then another is nearly blown up. Chuck's first day as the boss is not a good one.

The plot gives us a series of amusing interrogations - there's the girl who says she's too emotional, while crying, and the guy who can't get sent anywher...

'Chuck' 4.18 'Chuck Versus The A-Team' Review

March 15th, 2011 7:05am EDT
Chuck
As an Adam Baldwin fan, I am always in favor of a Casey-centric episode of Chuck. This one doesn't disappoint. Although I do now have a certain theme song stuck in my head because of the title.

John Casey has a lot on his plate. He's got his daughter's boyfriend for a new roommate, while he's off working on super-secret stuff that arouses the suspicions of his colleagues, so much so that they begin to spy on him. (I am amused that they do so in a minivan, which may be the most uncool vehicle on the planet.) Predictably, their concern for his well-being gets them all in trouble, until...

'Chuck' 4.17 'Chuck Versus The First Bank of Evil' Review

Chuck
First things first: I am in love with this episode title. It sounds like something out of a comic book, and I think it's cool.

Having said that, this episode can be seen as the second part of "Chuck Versus The Masquerade," picking up as Vivian McArthur Volkoff (Lauren Cohan) is quickly visited by Satan - I mean, Riley (Ray Wise), her father's lawyer, who is not happy when she declines to take over the family business. He's so unhappy that he pulls a gun on her, leading her to knock him upside the head with a vase and escape with the mysterious card she found in the safe. The card lead...

'Chuck' 4.14 'Chuck Versus The Seduction Impossible' Review

Chuck
Chuck has a tough act to follow after last week's psuedo-season (psuedo-series, even) finale. Now that Chuck and Sarah are reunited (and engaged!) the members of Team Bartowski are all too happy to get back to spy business, which means rescuing Roan Montgomery (John Larroquette) from Marrakesh, where he was last seen investigating (what else?) a group of female mercenaries led by Fatima (Spartacus: Blood and Sand star Lesley-Ann Brandt). Montgomery isn't all that happy about being rescued, especially since one errant sneeze gets everyone except Casey thrown in the dungeon. Since the...

'Chuck' 4.12 'Chuck Versus The Gobbler' Review

Chuck
We learned from last week's Chuck that Sarah was planning to go undercover in order to help Mary Bartowski take down Alexei Volkoff. This week, the ongoing plot once again returns to center stage - and it begins with Sarah beating the stuffing out of Casey. No, really.

It's been a few weeks since she's gone under, and having successfully pulled off several rogue jobs (and changed her hair color), she's come to the attention of Volkoff. She appeals to his romantic side, then disarms three of his bodyguards for measure, and that gets her a hug. (Yes, even bad guys hug people.) Her fi...

'Chuck' 4.11 'Chuck Versus The Balcony' Review

Chuck
When we left Chuck about a month and a half ago, it was one awkward Thanksgiving. It's no wonder that Chuck is taking stock of his life and wanting to propose to Sarah. Fortunately, just after he finds out she has "major proposal issues," Team Bartowski is shipped to a French chateau to recover a nanochip before a terrorist. This would seem the perfect opportunity to accomplish two things at once, but of course it wouldn't be that easy or we'd have a very short episode.

Recovering the nanochip requires going to the chateau and retrieving it from a bottle of wine, but not before sai...

Fanboy Fight: Joss Whedon Vs. J.J. Abrams - Who Is Your Favorite?

Joss Whedon and J.J. Abrams have both played a significant role in fandom and overall media popularity. Their creative similarities are striking enough to call for a showdown, comparing their works and styles. Whedon and Abrams are both part of a new class of filmmakers and television creators: fanboys who are now able to reign over their own fandoms.

This battle royale has been divided into two rounds: television and casting. With more time and space films could have been conquered as well. This fight works best if you are familiar with their work. If you have not had the chance ...
