Check Out 'The Captains Up Close With William Shatner,' Now On DVD

August 29th, 2013 2:24am EDT
The Captains Up Close
What was once nerdy is now cool, and in "The Captains Close Up With William Shatner" the original "Star Trek" captain travels the globe to chat with those who've also sat on the bridge in the iconic franchise.

The sci-fi series has become one of the most durable and beloved franchises of all time. At the center of each  incarnation is what has become a truly iconic character: The Captain.

"The Captains Close Up" is a five episode mini-series, as seen on Epix, that "boldly goes where no man has gone before," giving viewers an intimate look at the actors that have inhabited this role - all...

All Five 'Star Trek' Captains Unite At London Convention

October 21st, 2012 4:08pm EDT
William Shatner and Avery Brooks
Sci-fi fans were given the ultimate thrill on Saturday as all five Star Trek captains united at a London convention.

William Shatner, Patrick Stewart, Avery Brooks, Kate Mulgrew and Scott Bakula - who have each commanded starship operations in their respective shows - were brought together onstage at Destination Star Trek London.

The occasion marked only the second time the stars have come together, and the first time outside the U.S.

Shatner, who played Captain James T. Kirk, tells the BBC any former rivalry "has long since passed" and the stars are now "good friends", adding, "I would ...

TV on DVD Roundup: 'Blue Mountain State,' 'The Real L Word' And More

Blue Mountain State
Here's what's new in the world of TV on DVD: college mayhem, archaeologists, starship captains and lots of sex. Read on for looks at Blue Mountain State, The Captains, The Real L Word, Queer as Folk UK and more...

Blue Mountain State: Season Two (Lionsgate)

Spike's original series Blue Mountain State is one of my guilty pleasures. It's vastly inappropriate and doesn't always make sense, but it doesn't pretend to be anything other than a hilariously good time. In season two, slacker QB Alex Moran (Daytime Emmy winner Darin Brooks) is stuck trying to keep egotistical "star player" Ra...

Scott Bakula Blames Reality TV For Jobless Rise

October 4th, 2011 1:19pm EDT
Scott Bakula
Quantum Leap star Scott Bakula has taken a swipe at reality shows, blaming them for rising unemployment rates in the TV industry.

The veteran actor admits he enjoys watching several fly-on-the-wall programs but he's adamant there are now so many, they are keeping large numbers of actors, camera operators, and scriptwriters out of work.

He tells British TV show Loose Women, "I enjoy them. I have my favorite shows that I do watch. (But) I'm an actor, and reality shows have put a lot of us and a lot of people behind the cameras out of work. And writers. It's a big group.

"You know, we ki...

TNT Cancels 'Men Of A Certain Age'

July 18th, 2011 8:05am EDT
Men Of A Certain Age
Beloved comic Ray Romano's latest show Men Of A Certain Age is to be axed due to poor ratings.

The funnyman, who wrote and starred in the popular sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond for nine seasons, signed a deal with TNT in 2009 to pen the comedy, which focuses on the lives of a middle-aged man and his two college buddies, played by Andre Braugher and Scott Bakula.

However, after just two seasons, network executives have decided not to move forward with the show for another series, blaming the axing on viewing figures.

A spokesperson says, "TNT has been proud to be a part of Men of a Cer...

‘Men Of A Certain Age’ Returns With The Great Escape June 1 2011

June 2nd, 2011 4:43pm EDT
Men Of A Certain Age
I love Men Of A Certain Age, I really do. From the theme song, the Beach Boys “When I Grow Up To Be A Man,” right through to the last moments of each episode, I am hopelessly in thrall to this trio of normal guys, with normal problems. No one is all good or all evil, in fact, to these guys, a moment of thinking about themselves rather than their loved ones is about as evil as they get. They face real situations, like how to keep a roof over their heads, or when to schedule the dreaded, over 50, colonoscopy, as a united front. They genuinely want to be good people. When they fail, they get u...

Summer Preview: 'Men Of A Certain Age'

June 1st, 2011 3:00pm EDT
Men of a Certain Age
Beginning today, TNT rolls six out all-new episodes of Men of a Certain Age, starring Ray Romano (who also co-created the series), Scott Bakula, and Andre Braugher. I'm still too young to be within the show's midlife demographic, but what works about Men is that you don't have to be of a certain age - or even a man - to appreciate what makes the show tick. The circumstances and underlying issues are common for many of us.

For example, there's a moment early on in tonight's episode ("The Great Escape") where Terry (Bakula) meets current girlfriend Erin (Melinda McGraw) for lunch, ...

'Men Of A Certain Age' - The Best Humanity Has To Offer

November 17th, 2010 10:37am EST
Men of a certain age
“Men of a Certain Age” must have been a tough sell. I imagine if anyone other than Ray Romano had gone into a TNT pitch meeting and attempted to sell the network on the idea of three middle aged men contending with real life problems, they’d be laughed out of the office and told to come back when they had vampires or singing teenagers.

Men of a Certain Age season one is available now on DVD

Season 2 premieres December 6 at 10/9c on TNT.

Thankfully Ray Romano was behind “Men of a Certain Age” and was able to use his considerable talents to bring this truly delightful show to the airwaves....

Review: 'The Informant!' Has Moments And Some Top Notch Acting

September 17th, 2009 12:04pm EDT
The Informant
Mark Whitacre is, at times comically, a pathological liar who may or may not suffer from Bipolar Disorder. At least, this is the way he's portrayed by Matt Damon in Steven Soderbergh's "The Informant!". Soderbergh makes no attempt to hide that, yes, the events are based on a real life account of the former Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) executive turned FBI informant, but the story has been altered for the sake of creative license. Going as far to warn the audience with an opening written disclaimer that ends with the phrase "So there."

Whitacre's department is losing money. A lot of it. H...

Trailer Talk: This Week In Movies - 'The Informant,' 'Jennifer's Body' & More

September 14th, 2009 9:32am EDT
The Informant
Last week, the long weekend gave me a chance to see "District 9" in the movie theater. The film's science fiction elements took a back seat to its moral objective however, which was roughly to serve as an allegory for the Apartheid in South Africa.

Treatment of the aliens by humans, as a subhuman species really becomes emotionally jarring through the intense blood and gore that comprise the latter half of the movie. Audiences ultimately walk away from "District 9" disgusted by the inhumanity of the human race.

A nontraditional narrative, "District 9" is largely told through the use ...

Scott Bakula ("Quantum Leap") will guest star as Chuck and Ellie's estranged dad on NBC's action-comedy series "Chuck" (Mondays, 8-9 p.m. ET) in a multi-episode arc scheduled for broadcast later this spring.

In the storyline, Chuck made a promise to his sister, Ellie that he was going to find their dad in time for her wedding. But when he does find him, Chuck discovers that his dad is not necessarily a guy who wants to be found. He's living in a trailer, he's disheveled, he's paranoid and he's claiming constantly that Ted Roark (guest star Chevy Chase) -- who he used to work with -- ...

Lost genius J.J. Abrams is to make a new Star Trek movie. The movie - which will be the eleventh in the series - will be go back the franchise's roots and focus on the early days of original characters James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock. It will include their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and their first outer-space mission.

The film - which as yet doesn't have a name or a cast - will be released in 2008. It's hoped that Abrams - who is best know for cult shows, Alias and Lost, and the up-coming Tom Cruise blockbuster, Mission Impossible 3 - will be able to reverse the sci-fi franchise's...
