Elisabeth Sladen, who played one of the most popular Doctor Who companions in the franchise's history, has died. She was 63.

"It is with much sadness that we can announce Elisabeth Sladen, the much-loved actress best known for her role as Sarah Jane Smith in Doctor Who and CBBC's The Sarah Jane Adventures, passed away this morning," a BBC spokesman said Tuesday.

An outfit worn by Doctor Who star Tom Baker on the legendary sci-fi show has been bought for $48,000 at auction, 12 times what organizers expected it to fetch.

The 73-year-old's trademark brown tweed trousers, burgundy coat and striped scarf were sold at Bonhams auction house in London earlier today.

Baker starred as Doctor Who in 173 episodes of the BBC TV drama between 1974 and 1981.

Also auctioned was a pair of Batman and Robin costumes once worn in a festive episode of long-running British TV comedy Only Fool And Horses.
