September 6th, 2014 4:05pm EDT
High Fidelity
With the release of Innocence yesterday and the home video debut of A Long Way Down this Tuesday, it seems like we're in another phase where books are making their way to the big and small screens. Adaptations have long been a Hollywood staple, but it's not always obvious when a movie or TV show started life as a book. Many of the programs you've loved probably have an equally entertaining book behind them; you just haven't discovered it yet.

To that end, we've compiled this list of six great books that you might not know were behind six great film and television projects - in the hopes th...

Strike Back
Although Season 3 of Strike Back is over, Cinemax is giving us a look into the origins of the franchise, with the US premiere of the original UK series that started it all. Andrew Lincoln (The Walking Dead) and Richard Armitage (Spooks) star in Strike Back: Origins, a six-episode set that serves as a prequel to the adventures of Damian Scott, Michael Stonebridge and company.

Originally aired in 2010, this first installment of Strike Back focuses on John Porter (Armitage), a former elite military officer drafted back into service by one-time colleague Hugh Collinson (Lincoln) to work for hi...

'The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug' - Second Trailer Released (Watch It!)

October 1st, 2013 12:04pm EDT
The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug
The second trailer for the middle film in Peter Jackson's "Hobbit" trilogy, The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug, has been released, building plenty of anticipation for the film's December release.

Desolation picks up right where the first film, An Unexpected Journey, left off; with Bilbo (Martin Freeman), Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and the party of 13 dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) continuing their quest to the Lonely Mountain to reclaim its treasure and defeat its current inhabitant: the dragon Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch).

Other than the usual quick glimpses of the act...

Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling Among Contenders To Play Batman

August 6th, 2013 6:07pm EDT
Josh Brolin
Zack Snyder's reported list of actors in the running to play Batman in an upcoming crossover with Superman includes some intriguing selections.

At the top of the list, as far as name recognition, are Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling. Both have worked with Warner Bros. on Gangster Squad. Broslin is also working with the studio for Robert Rodriguez's Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. Gosling, on the other hand, seems to be attached to just about everything these days.

However, the trend for DC Comics superhero movies is hiring lesser-known names so that their star power doesn't overshadow the chara...

TV on DVD: 'MI-5: Volume 9'

July 15th, 2011 5:00pm EDT
This week, BBC Home Entertainment fulfilled its promise from earlier this year and brought us MI-5: Volume 9, the latest set of one of television's top dramas. Here's my review.

The Show

As I mentioned in my review of Volume 8, I'm a huge Spooks/MI-5 fan, and have been since the first episode. Even after all this time, when a new DVD set comes out, I run out and get it on release day and then spend the rest of my week watching it. It's definitely my favorite British series of all time and one of my favorite TV series of all time, period.

Yet there's a 'but' here. There's a rumor go...
