Washington, D.C.-born Cuban-American actor Laz Alonso started out along a much different career path, earning a marketing degree from Howard University and finding success as a Wall Street investment banker before he decided to follow his showbiz dreams. When he took the leap into acting in the early 2000s, the neophyte found work in commercials and videos for such artists as Toni Braxton and Aaliyah. Alonso soon moved on to features, but had to pay his dues for a while with small appearances in schlocky, B-grade Hollywood fare such as the ghetto slasher movie Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood (2003) and the sex comedy Hittin' It! (2004). He later enlisted in the casts of more respectable features, beginning around 2005, when he played a military private, Escobar, in Sam Mendes' Gulf War drama Jarhead, and a morgue security guard in the lucrative comic-book adaptation Constantine. In 2007, audiences could catch Alonso in two small roles: that of Zeke in the teen dance picture Stomp the Yard, and a small supporting turn as a detective in the creepy Roland Joffé-directed horror film Captivity. Meanwhile, Alonso signed on to work with Titanic guru James Cameron on the helmer's elephantine sci-fi opus Avatar (2009). The actor also landed the leading roles in Spike Lee's WWII film Miracle at St. Anna, as well as Justin Lin's Fast and Furious (the fourth installment of the popular series).
