| Long John Baldry Heartaches Release Date: 1974 Label: Pye Rating: ![]() |
Long John Baldry's reinvention as a Scott Walker/Englebert Humperdinck style balladeer was one of the most unexpected transformations of the late 1970s, and one -- in retrospect -- of the least welcome. True, he scored a major hit with the soaring "Let The Heartaches Begin" and came close again with "Mexico", the unofficial theme to the 1968 Olympic Games. But listening to even a brief sampling of the music he was making at the time reminds us of what a waste of his talents it was.
This 1974 collection, aimed at capitalizing on Baldry's recent resurgence on the Warner Brothers label, draws exclusively from this period and does, indeed, focus on the hits. "When The Sun Comes Shining Through" and "It's Too Late Now" join the aforementioned among the commercial highlights, while the remainder of the set stays equally true to those songs' parameters. But easy listening can be difficult at the best of times and, knowing what Baldry was truly capable of, it renders Heartaches a heartache indeed. Dave Thompson, All Music Guide
