70s Group Sues Ariana Grande For Copyright Infringement
Ariana Grande may have gone the wrong way by recording her single "The Way." The singer/actress has been named in a copyright infringement lawsuit over the 2013 hit.
British firm Minder Music, who own the rights to songs written and recorded by The Jimmy Castor Bunch, are suing Grande, executives at Sony/ATV, UMG Recordings and others over the tune.
Minder Music points out that Grande repeats, "What we gotta do right here is go back, back into time" on the song. The firm says her lyrics are lifted from the disco group's 1972 tune "Troglodyte," which features the spoken phrase, "What we're gonna do right here is go back, way back, back into time."
Minder Music executives are seeking a declaration of willful infringement, a permanent injunction, statutory damages and attorneys' fees.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the lawsuit was filed in Nashville, Tennessee.
